This file is a component of the digital structure contour map of the top of the Waste Gate Formation in Maryland, Virginia and potentially Delaware and New Jersey (1: 500,000 scale). The contour map is based on information previously published by the Maryland Geological Survey (Hansen, 1982, 1984) in which the Waste Gate Formation was formally named. Hansen (1982, 1984) included the existing elevation data for the top of formation from the available, but limited number of, boreholes that were drilled between 1944 and 1981 and penetrated this formation. For boreholes drilled in Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey, the elevation data (relative to mean sea level) from Hansen (1982, 1984) along with previously unpublished location coordinates were used as the source data points to develop the current structure contour map. New 500-foot structure contours were then created via manual interpolation. The structure contour map from Hansen (1982) was scanned and georeferenced for comparison purposes.
The geologic features of structure contour map are divided into separate (vector) files for structure contour lines and elevation data points. This vector layer includes the only the structure contour lines developed as digital line (arc) features in ESRI ArcGIS Shapefile format. The feature attribute table, which is part of this file, includes the elevation represented by each contour line.
This file and the related Waste Gate Formation Structure Contour Map showing elevation of the unit top, are provided in a projection specifically developed for this project, referred to as MRCSP_North_America_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic. This projection is an Albers Equal Area Conic NAD83 projection (in survey feet) that was adjusted by the MRCSP as follows: the central meridian to -82.0 degrees, and the standard parallels to 38.5 and 43 degrees (to better bracket the project's specific area of use).
</abstract>
<purpose>The main purpose of the map is to provide general guidance as to the structure and elevation of the top of the unit, which is being evaluated for possible deep geologic injection of carbon dioxide (carbon sequestration). This is one of a series of geologic contour and thickness maps being prepared as part of the Phase 1 research project of the MRSCP. The objective of the Phase 1 effort is to develop a coherent picture of carbon dioxide (CO2) sources and sequestration opportunities in the MRCSP region.</purpose>
<supplinf>Base layers for the map include state and county boundaries that were provided by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey which is one of the leading coordinators of the MRCSP.</supplinf>

The structure contour map was compiled by the MGS geologists and GIS specialists from existing, readily available, data. Digital attributes for the structure lines were assigned during the development of the shapefile in ArcInfo. Each line has an associated unit structure attribute based on the contour interval used in the manual interpolation. An additional attribute regarding the estimated pinch-out line was also assigned.
Feature attributes were then verified visually in the ArcInfo attribute tables. Attributes linked to map layout components were verified visually on the map both in print and symbolized display on-screen by geologists of the MGS and GIS specialists. Maryland Geological Survey performs quality assurance on the digital vector file by comparison of the digital data files and map to the source materials. Selected attributes that cannot be visually verified on plots or on screen are interactively queried and verified on screen by the GIS project coordinator and GIS specialist(s). <logic>Map elements were visually checked for duplicate features and other errors by the GIS specialist(s) who created the digital database. Hard copy prints of the map were reviewed by the MGS geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to mapping standards.</logic>
<complete>Updates may occur as needed or as additional data becomes available. Data are complete based on compilation at 1:500,000 scale of readily available data for Phase I of the MRCSP carbon sequestration project.</complete>

<horizpar>The structure contours represent estimated lines of equal elevation relative to mean sea level and were generated assuming proportional spacing between known data points. This followed standard techniques for generating contours and is interpretive by design. Therefore the difference between the horizontal position of the structure lines as interpolated and drawn and the real depth to top of formation at a particular location along the line is unknown; the location of the structure lines should be considered estimated or inferred.</horizpar>

(1.) A new ArcGIS polyline shapefile was set up in the MRCSP project projection: Albers Equal Area Conic projection, North American Datum 1983 (NAD83), US Survey feet.
(2.) In ArcMap the new shapefile was layered with the elevation point shapefile and relevant state and county boundary outline shapefiles. Mathematical determinations of the of the map distance between pairs of data points and intermediate 500-foot contour interval(s) points were calculated and temporary auxiliary data points were added to the point file.
(3.) The contour lines were manually interpolated using the original and temporary auxiliary points as an initial guide. (4.) For comparison purposes the contour map from Hansen (1982) was scanned at 300 dpi in TIFF format. The scanned TIFF image was brought into ESRI ArcMap software and georeferenced to the state boundary shapefile provided by Ohio Division of Geological Survey (MRCSP compiler). (5.) The interpolated contour lines were compared with the Hansen 1982 map TIFF by MGS geologists and GIS specialists. Edits were made to the interpolated lines as deemed appropriate.
(6.) Additional components of the feature attribute table for the shapefile were developed.
(7.) A contour map was composed in the layout function of ArcMap for project use. The shapefile, including spatial and attribute data for this file, along with other geospatial data/files for the contour map, were reviewed and the map was edited by project geologists and GIS specialists. (8.) Appropriate shapefiles were forwarded to the Ohio Division of Geological Survey for subsequent data compilation and additional map production for the MRCSP project, Phase 1.

<idPurp>The main purpose of the map is to provide general guidance as to the structure and elevation of the top of the unit, which is being evaluated for possible deep geologic injection of carbon dioxide (carbon sequestration). This is one of a series of geologic contour and thickness maps being prepared as part of the Phase 1 research project of the MRSCP. The objective of the Phase 1 effort is to develop a coherent picture of carbon dioxide (CO2) sources and sequestration opportunities in the MRCSP region.</idPurp>
<idAbs>&lt;DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"&gt;&lt;DIV&gt;&lt;DIV&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;This file is a component of the digital structure contour map of the top of the Waste Gate Formation in Maryland, Virginia and potentially Delaware and New Jersey (1: 500,000 scale). The contour map is based on information previously published by the Maryland Geological Survey (Hansen, 1982, 1984) in which the Waste Gate Formation was formally named. Hansen (1982, 1984) included the existing elevation data for the top of formation from the available, but limited number of, boreholes that were drilled between 1944 and 1981 and penetrated this formation. For boreholes drilled in Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey, the elevation data (relative to mean sea level) from Hansen (1982, 1984) along with previously unpublished location coordinates were used as the source data points to develop the current structure contour map. New 500-foot structure contours were then created via manual interpolation. The structure contour map from Hansen (1982) was scanned and georeferenced for comparison purposes.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;The geologic features of structure contour map are divided into separate (vector) files for structure contour lines and elevation data points. This vector layer includes the only the structure contour lines developed as digital line (arc) features in ESRI ArcGIS Shapefile format. The feature attribute table, which is part of this file, includes the elevation represented by each contour line.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN&gt;This file and the related Waste Gate Formation Structure Contour Map showing elevation of the unit top, were provided originally in a projection specifically developed for this project, referred to as MRCSP_North_America_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic. This projection is an Albers Equal Area Conic NAD83 projection (in survey feet) that was adjusted by the MRCSP as follows: the central meridian to -82.0 degrees, and the standard parallels to 38.5 and 43 degrees (to better bracket the project's specific area of use).
