Service Description: A listing of seismic events in West Virginia from 1824 to current (12/10/2021). From 2000 to current as of 12/10/2021, data was taken from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Earthquake Hazards Program. Previous years are taken from a combination of catalogues, mostly Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory (VTSO) and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO). Many of the "Historic" recorded earthquakes are taken from Wheeler, Russell L., Earthquakes In and Near the Northeastern United States, 1638-1998, Link: https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/i-2737/. Known and official "human-induced" seismic events (e.g., mine blasts, rock bursts) are not included; however, some events listed here may be "suspected" of human involvement. Please see the "wvges_comments" column for these.
