description:

This is a compilation structure contour map constructed upon the top of the Knox (Prairie du Chien) Group and the tops of latterly equivalent Beekmantown and Shakopee Dolomites and overlying Everton Dolomite. The structure contours were created primarily from previously created contour maps or provided Knox and Prairie du Chien well control tops. Newly added or edited contours are identified in the NAME field.

Structure contours for the Appalachian and Michigan Basins are from the Cambrian-Ordovician Knox structure (CO-4) mapped in the MRCSP Phase III Interim (MRCSP, 2012). New contours were added to the eastern portions of New York and Pennsylvania based upon mapped data from the overlying Black River Group mapped in the Utica Shale Play book (Hickman and others, 2015). Contours in Ontario were obtained from the Trenton-Black River Appalachian Basin Exploration Consortium (Patchen et al, 2006). Contours from the top of Knox in eastern Ohio were adapted from the Knox structure map data of the CO2 Storage Resources and Containment Assessment in the Cambrian and Ordovician Formations of Eastern Ohio Project (OCDO, 2021).

"Top of Knox Group/Base of Maquoketa Shale" grid contours from western and central Kentucky were from J.B. Hickman Univ. Kentucky PhD dissertation (Hickman, 2011).

Contours for the Illinois Basin were extracted from a new grid generated from St. Peter Sandstone subsurface and isopach created from the Illinois Basin Regional Structure Isopach Mapping 2021 datasets (IGS, 2021). The new grid represented the subsurface base of the St. Peter Sandstone, or the top of the Everton Dolomite in the southern Illinois Basin and the top of the Shakopee Dolomite in central and northern Illinois and adjacent western Indiana.

Structure contours in northern portion of Missouri and in selected areas of Wisconsin were adapted from a Praire du Chien map (figure 12) in USGS Professional Paper 1405-B (Young, H.L. and Siegel, D.I., 1992). Additional contours in Wisconsin were generated from a Prairie du Chien grid of well tops created from a digital stratigraphic database (WOFR2009-03) from the Wisconsin Geological Survey (WGS, 2009),

Iowa contours were generated from a grid of Prairie du Chien well tops provided from Iowa Geological Survey’s GeoSam geodatabase (IGS, 2021).

Author/Originator: Tom Sparks, Kentucky Geological Survey

Date Created: 2024
