Description:

This file is a component of the digital structure contour map of the top of the Needmore Formation in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania (1:500,000 scale). The contour map is based on available borehole data for the Needmore Formation provided by West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland and compiled by the Maryland Geological Survey. The contour map includes the elevation data points (relative to mean sea level) and the lines contouring the estimated top of formation at a 500-foot contour interval. Location coordinates for the data points are from published and previously unpublished records. This file includes only the structure lines developed as digital line (arc) features in ESRI ArcGIS shapefile format. Structure contours (500-foot contour interval) were constructed by interpolation using Ordinary Kriging and subsequent minor manual methods applied to a selected dataset of available elevations of the top of formation from the compiled borehole information. The Ordinary Kriging was completed using the Geostatistical Analyst extension in ESRI's ArcGIS software. The feature attribute table, which is part of this file, includes the elevation represented by each contour line. The selected elevation data points used to develop the contour lines are provided in the associated point shapefile, NEED_TOP_PTS_MRCSP (see metadata associated with that file for details). This file and the related Needmore Formation Structure Contour Map, showing the elevation of the top of the unit, are provided in a projection specifically developed for this project, referred to as MRCSP_North_America_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic. This projection is an Albers Equal Area Conic NAD83 projection (in survey feet) that was adjusted by the MRCSP as follows: the central meridian to -82.0 degrees, and the standard parallels to 38.5 and 43 degrees (to better bracket the project's specific area of use).

Production of the digital geospatial data set was funded, in part, by the United States Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL) via the Midwest Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), which is led by Battelle.
