Description:

This isopach map shows the thickness of the interval from the top of the Onondaga to the base of the Lockport Dolomite and latterly equivalent Devonian and Silurian units. It was created by computer interpolation (kriging) of borehole data for much of the map extent. In several places the computer generated contours were modified by hand to accommodate faults or where such modification was deemed necessary by other geologic information that was available. In Kentucky, the extensive faulting required that the data be interpolated by hand. The map shows the thickness from the top of the Traverse Limestone to the base of the Niagara Group within Michigan. Within Indiana the thickness is displayed by the tops of the Traverse in eastern Indiana and North Vernon Limestone in western Indiana, to the top of the Salamonie Dolomite. In western Ohio, the top of the Olentangy to the base of the Lockport Dolostone is the thickness. In eastern Kentucky the top of the Onondaga Limestone to the base of the Lockport Dolostone composes the thickness. In West Virginia there is a facies change from east to west between the McKenzie formation and the Lockport Dolostone. There is also a facies change from east to west between the Needmore Shale, Huntersville Chert, and the Onondaga in West Virginia. From the tops of the Needmore, Huntersville and the Onondaga, to the base of the McKenzie and Lockport, shows the thickness in West Virginia. In Pennsylvania the Mifflintown Formation transitions to the Lockport from East to West. From the top of the Onondaga to the base of these units displays the thickness within Pennsylvania. Within Maryland the tops of the Needmore Shale and the Onondaga, which show a facies change from east to west respectively to the base of the McKenzie, is the thickness. More detailed mapping of these units is planned for phase II of the project.

Author/Originator: The Geological Surveys of Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia

Date Created: 2005
