snippet: The main purpose of the map is to provide general guidance as to the potential thickness of the unit, which is being evaluated for possible deep geologic injection of carbon dioxide (carbon sequestration). This is one of a series of geologic contour and thickness maps being prepared as part of the Phase 1 research project of the MRSCP. The objective of the Phase 1 effort is to develop a coherent picture of carbon dioxide (CO2) sources and sequestration opportunities in the MRCSP region.

description:

This file is a component of the digital isopach map of the Needmore Formation in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania (1: 500,000 scale). The isopach map is based on available borehole data for the Needmore Formation provided by West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland and compiled by the Maryland Geological Survey. The isopach map includes the data points of unit thickness and the lines contouring estimated equal unit thickness at a 25-foot contour interval. This file includes only the isopach lines developed as digital line (arc) features in ESRI ArcGIS Shapefile format. Isopach contours (25-foot contour interval) were constructed by interpolation using Ordinary Kriging and subsequent minor manual methods applied to the selected dataset of available thickness data points from the compiled borehole information. The Ordinary Kriging was completed using the Geostatistical Analyst extension in ESRI's ArcGIS software. The selected thickness data measurements used to develop the isopach contour lines are provided in the associated point shapefile, NEED_THK_PTS_MRCSP (see metadata associated with that file for details). This file and the related Needmore Isopach Map are provided in a projection specifically developed for this project, referred to as MRCSP_North_America_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic. This projection is an Albers Equal Area Conic NAD83 projection (in survey feet) that was adjusted by the MRCSP as follows: the central meridian to -82.0 degrees, and the standard parallels to 38.5 and 43 degrees (to better bracket the project's specific area of use).

Production of the digital geospatial data set was funded, in part, by the United States Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL) via the Midwest Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), which is led by Battelle.
